Summer is ending. You are sure to have some students entering class with a brooding disposition. This is normal. We have all experienced waking up on the wrong side of the bed. When this happens, creating a comfortable and supportive classroom environment can help students calm down and get ready to learn. Stay calm.
When one of your students is having a not-so-good morning or day, they may need a place to calm down and regroup. A calming corner in the classroom gives students a designated space to take a short break and manage their emotions.
What does your classroom calming corner look like? If you don't already have one, make one. Try adding a beanbag, some rugs, and pillows to your calming corner. These simple additions can make the space feel comfortable, inviting, and relaxing for students.
A poster with the website to a kid-friendly virtual calming room is an extra-special touch, too. Your student needing a little extra support may want to use their Chromebook.
A classroom calming corner can be especially helpful for students who need a few quiet minutes before returning to instruction. Be sure to stress that students should spend only five to ten minutes in the calming corner before rejoining the class.
Creating a calming corner is one simple way to provide comfort in the classroom while helping students develop strategies for managing difficult moments.
